As long as people will pay these prices, they'll remain high.
As for employment, I've lived in the Shore area my entire life and have never had a problem maintaining a high-paying job. I think people in certain industries (stock market, specifically) often remain up north because they have to work in NYC, or people in pharma often live in the Princeton area, but aside from situations like that I've never seen a real problem. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the state since the water and boating have always been a big part of my life, but different people like different things and have different priorities.
Oh, and I've always stunk at math, so no finance jobs for me anyway.
For the kinds of communities referenced in that article, it is an excellent time to buy certain kinds of properties, especially if you are a cash buyer. However, if I had $2,000,000 to spend, I'd find a few smaller houses on nice lots instead of one on the beachfront, for lots of reasons.

FWIW, I know a few people who commute from Manasquan and the surrounding towns to NYC. Specifically, one person from Squan, one from Spring Lake and one from Brick. It's not the most pleasant commute, but it's do-able if you want to live here badly enough.
Homes a small distance away from the water have declined. Some might still be walkable but any farther away and it doesnt make sense. If you live 2 miles or 5 miles from the water, you have to drive either way so might as well live 5 miles and save money. Also, home owner's insurance will be less expensive.

I wish there was an express train.
Yeah, the train situation is awful in the southern Monmouth area. Because they use diesel-powered trains on the coast line, you have to switch to get into NYC. It's long and expensive, hence why on the rare occasions I travel to NYC I usually just take my own car. Not worth the hassle and the expense for the few times I year I have to go to the city for something.
People absolutely do make that commute, but if I were in an industry that required me to work in NYC, I don't think I would want to do it either.
I know a person who commutes to NYC from Asbury Pk each day. Luckily his radio show is only 4 hours long, because with all the train stops on the way he spends another 4 hours, 2 each way to get to work and back.

Yeah, it's no picnic getting to NYC from anywhere, much less Monmouth County. I'm in Ocean which makes it 10x worse.
Luckily I don't have to go there for any business purposes!
