Yup- 2% here and in NC. Figure if you spend $150/week on food, that's $3 a week, or $150/year. Far less than what I save on property taxes......lol

You need food to live it should not be taxed.....I could deal with junk food being taxed but not the staples

That's why it's not charged at the full sales tax rate. Fast food, candy, etc., gets the full sales tax.

I need to live somewhere to survive, too- should I not pay tax on my residence?

How about clothing! To protest, I'll walk around naked!

You need lots of stuff to live unless you are OK with living naked outside eating your non-taxed bread and water.

Yup- and don't think it won't happen in NJ. They've got to make up that $11 billion deficit somehow, so why not start taxing all your fancy jeans and Manolo Blahnik shoes?

You forgot to mention the tax on clothes Bob! Now that ought to get everyone's panties in a wad!

Truthfully tho, while there are many "nuisance taxes" here that are totally foreign to the average NJ resident, I still manage to save a bundle on property tax and auto insurance. Surprisingly my homeowners' insurance is roughly the same as I paid in NJ.

Getting back to the OP's question, I just wonder if the old formula of homebuying is back in fashion. 3x your salary and 20% down. Think of the grief that ol' formula might have saved the country if that chestnut of economic wisdom had been followed. For the OP, however, I suspect what he has to bring to the table might cover the downpayment for 2-car detached garage in Harding Township! First-time home ownership in NJ is a tough financial nut to crack.

I wonder if Carrie did her clothes and shoe shopping in the Short Hills Mall or Riverside Square?
