I was wondering if Cranford NJ is popular with snakes. In other words, if you live in Cranford, NJ, how often would you see one in your backyard? I am terrified of snakes and I was told that I WILL have one in my backyard once I move to NJ...Very "appealing" perspective...

Maybe not more than other areas...but still, how often do you get one near your home if you live in Cranford, NJ?

LOL, I don't think you'll have many run-ins with snakes if you live in Cranford. I lived in Cranford for many years, and I don't think I saw one snake. Where are you moving from?

By the way, why is this in the South Jersey forum?

I lived in NJ all my years growing up and never saw one. Family is from all around that area. I don't know who told you but I think they might have been pushing your buttons.

Probably because people from outside NJ have no clue - they look at a map and see anything below Woodbridge as the southern half. I have a friend from Brooklyn who moved to E. Brunswick and told me she is very familiar with south jersey. I asked her when she'd ever been there, other than Atlantic City and she told me she lives in it!

Send her on a field trip to Batsto. She might even see a snake there.

Snakes are widespread acrosss the state.

Cranford probably has some garter snakes and near water, the northern water snake. You will probably never see one but with such a fearful attitude you are bound to cross paths with one. That's just the way things work when you tell it to the universe.

Snakes feed on all the other vermin you are afraid of and haven't mentioned. Consider the other vermin will show themselves more often than any snake would.

Some eastern timber rattlers and copperheads in the north west and for certain in Passaic co. Union co certainly has some reptilian residents.

It is the mosquitos and ticks you should be afraid of as they cause far more death and disease than any herd of NJ snakes ever could.

Found this garter snake in my Japanese barberry along the front sidewalk here in central NJ.

I also am terrified of snakes to the point I avoid looking at any photos or TV. I truly understand your phobia and sympathize. I lived in various parts of NJ for quite a few years and during that time I only saw one garter snake in Nutley. I'm not sure where you are coming from, but doubt if you should worry.

PS Hawaii has no snakes in fact they are actually banned from bringing them onto the island, which is why we spend two months a year there! LOL
