So as I understand it, you cannot add a full bathroom in a basement under the city code. but you can add a partial bathroom right? Like toilet and sink. What are the chances/consequences of adding a full bathroom and having the city find out?

The bathment has basement windows and a basement entry, why would it be against a code? Is it because the windows need to be a certain size for fire code reasons?

On that note, anybody recommend any contractors that have experience adding/converting bathrooms and finishing basements. The basement is currently undone, the house was probably built in the 50/60s on Valley Rd. Clifton.

Thanks,

The chances of getting caught now aren't that great, unless an inspector drives by and sees a contractor's truck in front of your house. The problem occurs when you go to sell the house- the disclosure statement asks if any work was done without permits, so you'll be committing fraud if you say "no", and many buyers are now researching whether permits were pulled as well. Lastly, the town may not issue you a Certificate of Occupancy if they find the bathroom.

In general, it's not really a good idea.

a law like this could be very specific to clifton. maybe they are trying to prevent illegal apartments.

why don't you just call them up and ask if you are allowed to do it ? and if so, under what circumstances. if they so no then you can decide if you still want to do it illegally.
