Dude, she was born in Texas. (El Paso) according to the news.. No illegal, no mexican.. she is of spain/spanish origin.
Her platform is against illegal immigration and giving them benefits such as scholaships, food stamps and so fourth....
There's that broad "the news" again.
According to her website, she was born in the "Rio Grande Valley".
To me, that's deliberately misleading...why not just say she was born and raised in Texas?
Are NM voters really going to hold it against her, that she was not born and raised in NM?
Or maybe it's just all of those Texas ties...born there, raised there, educated there, gets a lot of money there....
She's lived in, and practiced law in Las Cruces for such a long time it seems she has the gist of what she feels is important to NM, so why try so hard to be vague about her background? Is there something else she's hiding?
I would argue that El Paso is more tied into New Mexico than is Hobbs. Hobbs is actually more tied into Texas. There should be a land swap of sorts between the two states. Las Crucens have WAY more in common with El Paso than does Hobbs. I would argue that Albquerque does too. So many people commute between these two big cities to see families. If I were Martinez, I would put on my website that she was born in El Paso. It's a non-issue, really. I don't think it would compel a socialist democrat, for instance, any more or less that she was from El Paso, or Hobbs. That perspective voter will vote for the candidate that promises tax increases on the rich, and increased controls, whether the candidate is from El Paso, El Salvador, or Mount Pleasant South Carolina.
And believe this or not, many latinos are as well. They can pretty much control the election in NM. This is not to be taken as a racist statement I want to add. I am only pointing out, being latino will help her and being a hispanic conservative will even more.
This is the typical cynical ploy of the right, the reason they chose Michael Steele to head the Republican party. "Those liberals elected a black president, we'll show we're hip too and choose a black leader." Totally misses the point. Now Republicans in New Mexico believe Martinez is their trump card against Denish. "Not only have we got a woman, she's latina, too! We win!" Forget about any fussy details, like qualifications for the job.
I have no doubt some Hispanic Democrats will vote for Martinez because she is Hispanic and would make history as the first Hispanic female governor of a state. Can't deny some people think that way, and some confused people may even make the mistake and assume Martinez (given the name) is the Democrat. But the only Hispanic Republican I know told me he would never vote for someone with a Hispanic surname. He is a naturalized US citizen who left his South American country because of its corruption, which in his mind is associated with Hispanic leadership. He told me, "I came to this country to get away from Hispanic leaders, I will never vote for one here." I'm assuming he's an outlier.
I assumed Rio Grande Valley was far south Texas...Brownsville, McAllen...very close to the border and regardless of her hard line stance against immigration reform, might bring to mind "Mexico" to ill informed voters.

Yes, some may be shocked to learn that the Rio Grande Valley or the Lower Rio Grande Valley, is an area located in the southernmost tip of South Texas, not really near New Mexico.

What an extremely naiive comment, one that can only come from ignorance. It can be forgiven in his case, because he immigrated from a South American country, and brought his worldview/experience with him.
This is the United States of America. Martinez has the Spanish surname, but she's an AMERICAN.
But she's still an unknown as to how she would really govern, so one never knows.
