I'm not sure, but my girlfriend and I may be doing a drive from Louisiana to Arizona. We will be leaving early in the morning so as to make the trip in one day. But we need to know if it is safe to travel at night across the New Mexico desert at night by car?

I'm guessing you're taking about taking I-10. I've driven through El Paso/Las Cruces in the evening and felt safe.

Don't be afraid to pull off somewhere and take a nap, that's a long drive, staying awake on a long boring stretch can be hard.

I would NOT pull off just anywhere to sleep! If that becomes necessary, best to stop in one of the towns and park in a lighted shopping mall, truck stop or Walmart, IMO.

What is the fear of NM. I vacation all over NM every year. Love the State. What am I suppose to be looking for. I generally spend time in Santa Fe, Chama, Taos, and a few other towns. You guys act like it is not a State or am I missing some important News?

There are wild animals in the desert. And the car could be accosted. I have to make sure my girlfriend will be safe.

Didn't mean to give the impression to pull off anywhere. A well lit place like a shopping area, truckstop... would be the only intelligent choice.

As for wild desert animals accosting your car, well... you have a very unusual impression of the desert.

We, as citizens of New Mexico, will be able to innately sense that you are not locals and will appear magically from the desert to accost your car.

Seriously, you'll be fine.. I wouldn't recommend trying to drive all that way without resting though- a lot of it will be long, boring, flat, straight roads, and those put people to sleep. It will take you probably ten hours just to get through Texas itself. I hope that you'll be switching off, at least.

You would think that NM was like.. part of another country or something with the way people refer to it.
