People don't really seem to know but there is a very nice little art gallery downtown Clovis, right across from the WellsFargo bank. The art is Pollock modern, the space is clean and modern, and the artist is a very interesting guy. Seems like he's closed a lot now because Clovis just can't seem to support any kind of culture.

Are there any other good artist's or music or just things to do in Clovis?

Downtown could be really nice and Santa Fe like. I've heard that there is someone who wants to put apartments and shopping in the old Hotel Clovis but some people are fighting it, calling it HUD housing (I've also heard it's actually specialized affordable housing for the military folks). Who cares either way? Just one block over the houses are falling down, it's not like it will change the neighborhood. Anything to revitalize that down town and give people something to do. Image if that down town was cleaned up with shopping, restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries, theaters, and micro brews. It wouldn't be that hard or expensive and Clovis would have something to be proud of.

I cant see Clovis as you described. Art galleries and micro brews......thats comical. Santa Fe and Clovis are two tottally different worlds. Good luck to Clovis though.

We moved here from Germany and I thought the downtown area would be like what you discribed. Then I arrived... Never gonna happen. Maybe I shouldnt say "Never".. but its gonna take years and years.. like maybe my kids.. kids would see it.. but I dont know why my kids.. kids would ever come here.

It would be nice to see more activity downtown. Is anything opening up?

As a future Clovis resident (moving there within a few months), here is one burning question I have: why is there no nightlife? The last I've heard is that there is one (1) bar in Clovis, and I assume no clubs whatsoever. I get that it's a pretty small town with a strong religious influence, but I grew up in a much smaller town (~15,000) which is in the heart of the Bible Belt, and that town now has at least 2-3 bars, probably more. Plus, there has been a massive influx of people the last couple of years, many of whom must be young and single. What gives? I read on another forum that to get a liquor license one must pay $500k to the local Baptist church, but something that absurd can't be true, can it?

Also, I know I'm rehashing a long-running debate on this forum, but as an unmarried 20-something who makes decent money and enjoys sports, music, movies, social environments and a few cold beverages (among other things), should I live in Portales rather than Clovis? I've seen precious little in the way of rentals in either place, but based on older posts in this forum I'm not surprised. Thinking seriously about buying, if nothing else due to lack of options.

Thanks for the help!

Well there are 2 bars in Portales but it seriously lacks any kind of fun, its just as boring as Clovis is and very religious. It dosent have much for being a college town.

When I lived in Nowhere, USA there was never a lack of booze or fun. Load up the fridge with beer, the cabinet with liquor, the coffee table with snacks, crank the tunes and invite people over, including the neighbors. You will make yourself very popular.

I was talking about small-town New England, but I meant any place without much in the way of bars or entertainment like Clovis.

Alot of people drive to Lubbock or Amarillo for the weekend to go dancing, etc. There is a neat drive-inn on the Clovis highway going into Lubbock. Then there are alot of people that go to Albuquerque. Clovis is stuck in the 1950s and doesn't want to change. Many, if not most of the people that live in Clovis or Portales were born there and have lived there all their lives (they aren't very sophisticated to say the least); Clovis is all they know. It's just a boring little town. Between the two though (Portales vs. Clovis), I'd pick Clovis for the two years you have there.
