Another slideshow with not much content to back up the rankings, though I have read on other lists/polls before that Santa Fe is among the cleanest cities in the US, most notably clean air. I get year round allergies here in Massachusetts, I did notice more respiratory clarity when I was in NM and less allergy symptoms.

I find this list completely false. San Juan county, where Farmington is, has more bad ozone days than anywhere else in the state according to the American Lung Association. The list almost looks like it was proposed by the coal industry, as most of these locations have coal power plants (or other coal-burning facilities) in or near them.

The article does state:

Quote:
Like other towns in New Mexico, Farmington enjoys some of the cleanest air in the nation. But here's the irony — not far from this city of 45,000 is the San Juan Generating Station, a 40-year-old coal plant that's been under pressure from the Environmental Protection Agency to reduce its pollution. Farmington may be fine, but nearby Navajo communities bear the brunt of the pollutants. [LEFT]

I find the "bear the brunt" and "may be fine" part of that statement interesting. Sounds like the lawyers came up with the wording.

"but nearby Navajo communities bear the brunt of the pollutants"

It's as if they're saying it doesn't matter, because they're just Navajos. Sheesh.

Farmington really? They couldn't find another city in the whole country that had cleaner air than Farmington, I find that hard to believe. This is why I pay no attention to these lists.

But at least they picked small cities in rural states.

I did not interpret it that way... They made what appears to be a statement of fact...

Bogus list. But as far as the "city" in Hawaii is concerned, most places in Islands have trade winds to carry off air pollution--unless you live on the Big Island close to an active volcano.
