Well, due to not being able to get off for Labor Day , it looks like we might try to get up there this weekend. The only thing I'm kind of worried about is the weather. It looks like a pretty good chance of rain for Friday & Saturday, not as much for Sunday. How are the roads up there if a good rainstorm hits?
I've seen rain affect the roads from "knocking the dust down" to 6" deep in front of the Timberon Mall earlier this summer. Usually it is not bad. I like Timberon the best in July and August because of the rains but I always enjoy.
Okay, that doesn't sound too bad. We also have a 2 wheel drive F150. I can see how the real danger might be flash flooding. We're pretty used to that here in San Antonio, so we know how not to be stupid if that occurs. I just want to make sure if we make that trip up there to see the land that we'll actually be able to see it. We're thinking about starting out early, early Saturday morning, then turning around and going back early Sunday afternoon. I know, it sounds crazy and not half worth it, but mine and my husband's work schedules are such, right now, that it's difficult for us to get any long stretch of days off together. (Hopefully, that will be changing soon.)
I understand the timing troubles. I was going to go out over Labor Day but my wife's schedule conflicted. I'd recommend I-10 to Ft Stockton and then 285 north to Artesia and then west to Cloudcroft. I reall like the views driving along the river up to Mayhill. If you leave around 3am you'll get there by dinner time and get to look around some before dark.
