i was just wondering btw before we head to new mexico, i have a son who will be playing football next season. Is hs football big in this state or is it an after thought. Is it well attended or hardly at all. there also seem to be not very many teams in the biggest class, so does that make it pretty easy to win championships in new mexico

Well Southern New Mexico is known for its football.
Artesia High School in Artesia has won over 26 footaball titles in the history of the school... It also has one of the nicest football stadiums in the nation.
Lovington, Clovis and Las Cruces have some of the best teams as well. Las cruces was named on america's top 100 best football teams last year.
So the answer to your question is: yes, Football is big, but basketball is tied on the side. It is pretty tough winning here in New Mexico but its always the same region taking it all.

compared to where? Is it like the southern states, Texas, Al and AR for instance? No, but there are pockets of NM where it is very big. Take the southern section of the state, closer to Texas and you will find a lot of football. Of course all schools, like everywhere in the country offer football programs.. Are you thinking of relocating because of a job change or are you looking at a place where your son will have the best opportunity to play football?
More often than not, the southern/eastern schools do rule the roost in NM. But not this past season, where La Cueva & Manzano (both from NE Albuquerque) were easily the cream of the crop.

Bradley is right. I have a friend who lives outside of Hagerman who knows a couple of the Artesia football coaches. And the town supports their football team! If I'm not mistaken, the 26 championships is a state record.
Re: Bradley mentioning Lovington. A pretty fair football player came out of there and was the #1 pick of the 2000 NFL draft-Brian Urlacher of the Chicago Bears.
Yea Artesia is like the craziest football town I have seen since Katy Texas.... but Albuquerque schools did very well this year.
All southern New Mexico schools have nice football stadiums, even if they are not "good"...
But there is two northern new mexico schools that do good for football, farmington and aztec.
yep, football to Artesia is like jelly to peanut butter, they just go together, the town loves their high school football, they even have a really nice football stadium for a school and town of its size.
Yea, Artesia is not only good at football, but BASEBALL, they have a nice set of fields and the Bulldog Pit, for basketball.
Artesia: Football lovers, the whole town shuts down for football
Espanola: I may be biased, but this town filled with traffic shuts down for its basketball team.
