In the spirit of NM Magazine's "One of our 50 is missing":

For those relocating to NM: be prepared to deal with the geographically confused...

1. In the first 6 months, at least one credit card will be placed on "security hold". You will spend at least 45 minutes on the phone attempting to convince the assigned Security Officer (usually an ex-cop from Boston or Buffalo) that the recent charges in New Mexico are legit, your card is not being used to fuel a criminal spending spree in a foreign country, and yes, NM is a state- look at my change of address, there's a ZIP code...

2. You may need to convince your insurance agent that your automobile policy coverage does include New Mexico.

3. You will likely have to remind at least one visiting friend/relative the pueblo your visiting is not a monument and they are walking into someone's home.

Any others....?

Las Vegas has a few of its own:

1. Expect the occasional clever shipping clerk to reroute your order to Nevada. Twice.

2. Customer Service phone reps bantering slyly about the clubs and casinos in an attempt to establish rapport

3. Las Vegas....New Mexico? Are you sure?

4. "To get to the Strip from here you take I 25 South. If you want the North Strip take the US 285 exit, and go about 8 miles past Santa Fe. For the South Strip stay on the Interstate, it starts at San Felipe and goes for about another 40 miles."

Yes, there are idiots in the world.
I've had to deal with them already.
The above post sounds like it's a joke but it's really not and it's sad that people don't understand that there is a New Mexico.
I was trying at one point to get some military information that I would need to change when I move to NM and these operators continued to put me through to Mexico.
How stupid is that??

And for you eBay'ers out there - how many of you have won an auction, only to have the seller (upon seeing your NM shipping address), email to tell you that THEY ONLY SHIP TO USA ADDRESSES

My husband and I tried to call a 1-800 number one time to book a hotel of a national chain in Espanola. Our customer service agent wouldn't help because she said she couldn't book hotels outside the United States.

I called the DMV to verify the forms of info I needed to transfer my New Mexico drivers license to my new state. Apparently, I am supposed to jump through extra hoops such as bringing my passport because I am from New Mexico.

I met some of my new neighbors. One asked about the poverty and stick huts people live in.

Quick story, kinda pertains. Live in staff housing Alamo Navajo Reservation,NM. Returning home from our weekly trip to the big box store noticed a mini van with a family from Iowa that had stopped next to our clinic. I stopped to offer directions/help as we are in the middle of nowhere and to make matters worst, it was a sunday and everything is closed 'round here. Had to tap on the closed window to ask if I could help them out. Window lowers and husband explains that the wife forbid him or anyone else in the van from stepping out or unlocking the doors because wife and children were afraid of the "indians".Husband asks where is the trading post on rez as they were directed to the rez as a source for horsehair pottery. Told them sorry but the trading post is closed on sunday and thay made the 60 mile detour for nothing. Last I saw of them they were haulin' back to the main road. Really can't convey the scared looks of mom and the children. Wife mentioned after saying goodbye to these folks how uninformed can americans be domesticity let along a world view.

After I gave someone on the telephone my address in NM and home phone number, they asked if they needed to dial an 01 before it (for international calls).

Tee shirt seen around LV: "New Mexico, a lot like the old one but cleaner"

True LV story:

This past spring a man was killed here during a drug dispute. The victim was left in his car, both abandoned on the west edge of town. In the story about the crime run by the ABQ Journal North Edition, the local officer in charge of the investigation was asked why it took a few days to find the body. The LV cop's response, "The car was abandoned in the barb wire fence on a vacant lot, next to an abandoned mobile home- nothing appeared unusual."

You could always reply "No, but you have to use one of those special calling cards you get at the store by the bus station..."
