Wondering how the drive is ? Is it mostly flat, or driving over a lot of mountains. Any areas that are really high up, I don't like driving by high cliffs.

No, it is not mostly flat, but it is scenic. There are two routes. The High Road to Taos and the low road.

The High Road to Taos Scenic Byway is described here and has a video: High Road to Taos Scenic Byway

I would recommend you take that route and return on what is refered to as a the Low Road, shorter and faster...

Map for the entire trip:

Santa Fe to Taos via High Road and return via Low Road
The trip up: 83.0 mi, 2 hours 12 mins
The trip back: 69.8 mi, 1 hour 25 mins
