I really digged the scenery in the opening parts of the movie, as well as the location of the great shootout.

Where can one find this kind of terrain? I hear it's around the Santa Fe area? Is that true?

I read that many of the downtown scenes were shot in Albuquerque.

The opening sequence was shot in Arroyo Hondo- west of Taos.

The motel scene at the end was filmed on San Mateo I think. When watching it I wondered why it looked more like Alb when it was supposed to be El Paso.

I thought it was actually East Central; the fast food restaurant gave it away.

(Interior scenes could have been at a different motel, though)..

That was the Desert Sands motel on Central, near San Mateo.

The 'suburban' redidential neighborhood scene at the end was filmed in the neighborhood east of Old Town, south of Central, and as funkymonkey points out, the hotel was Desert Sands. For years they kept the mismatched room number plate on that door (#7 or 9 if I recall) and it was clearly visible when driving or walking past.

One of my absolute favorite movies. Scenery, acting, story, visually it was everything. My other fave is There Will Be Blood. Obviously, the West has an appeal to me. And strong acting and even stronger story. Those two films just really strike a cord with me.
