About 10 miles South of Alamogordo lies Dog Canyon and the park. My wife says its a nice looking area and a farmer told us the water is good and relatively plentiful at least in Dog Canyon.

I suppose for objectivity I should take my dog but what do you humans think of the place?

Nice, quiet place with beautiful scenery. A lot like a park. Wait a minute, it is a park! You'll like it.

I'm not sure from your post what you are interested in doing there, or maybe you are trying to be funny?

I have been there a couple of times for hiking. I am not interested in dogs or the water running through the canyon (which did not seem that plentiful to me). There is a short nature trail by the visitor center which is pleasant. The main hiking trail up the mountain is very steep and rocky for the first mile or so, but then levels out before climbing again. It is a beautiful area. But I'm not sure if you are interested in hiking there.

I asked because people live near there and my wife said it was scenic. There are even some orchards within a mile or two.

I have passed by the sign there and always wondered what was over there. You have my curiosity peaked now.

I've attached a photo taken from the mountainside above the State Park that shows some of the terrain to the west between Dog Canyon and US-54. Visitor center and the walking trail/spring are out of the photo to the right. The spring does have a fairly steady trickle of water these days, but the claim of a flowing stream in the canyon above the spring is misleading in this era of severe drought.

Here's a screen capture from Google Street View of a small orchard (pecans?) on the road to Oliver Lee SP.

Oliver Lee was quite a character. I used to confuse him with Albert Fall.

My husband and I moved here 3 years ago. We walk the foothills a lot. No street lights so the stars are bright! Like living in the country, lots of wildlife.
