Many balloon pilots sign up to participate in Albuquerque Aloft. Pilots launch their balloons from selected school grounds in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho on the Friday morning before Balloon Fiesta, which is Friday, October 5th, 2012. Albuquerque Aloft started in 1990, and continues to bring the joy of ballooning directly to children in their school playgrounds. Parents, students and teachers and others have the opportunity to meet the pilots and crew, and experience the excitement of watching and learning how a balloon flies. Albuquerque Aloft also provides city residents and guests a visual preview of Balloon Fiesta, as balloons launch from different sites around the city simultaneously. Balloonists at selected schools may elect to fly from the campus or may remain inflated at the school site. Weather permitting; inflation is scheduled at approximately 7:00 a.m., with launch scheduled for 7:25 a.m. The simultaneous launch is coordinated by KKOB AM Radio, the “official voice” of Balloon Fiesta. Schools are encouraged to invite parents and students to be on hand for the event, and groups at some schools offer refreshments for sale, adding to the fun. Here is a list of the 2012 participating schools and the pilots that were scheduled to launched from each school. Note that there may be more than one balloon at the event. This is a FREE event!!! Over 60 schools are involved in the event:

If you're interested in Navajo rugs at all, the second largest rug ever woven (I think) is on display at the Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner until October 28. The rug is 26x28 feet and woven by 8-10 weavers over a period of a year (one rug, not 25 sewn together). We visited today and were in awe of the rug. It is so big it is difficult to display, but it's a treat to see.
The largest Navajo rug is 30x36 feet and will be displayed at the La Posada Hotel in Winslow AZ in 2013, after they finish constructing the room where it will be shown.
On the last Sunday of October, friends gather in the South Valley of Albuquerque, New Mexico for an amazing autumn ritual – the burning of El Kookooee. The giant effigy, designed by local school children, towers thirty feet above the crowd. Dance troupes twirl and shimmy. Scraps of paper containing scribbled fears and worries are tossed inside the giant, and burned up in flames.
South Valley burns away the darkness of the underworld. In the 500 year cycle, 2012 will bring us into the light. Xochipilli Aztec Dancers open the night followed by a Condolence Blessing, Raks Zeina Belly Dancers, and finally, a group of fire dancers light the effigy. Grooves of DJKossi and Michael Tinker. Celebrate the harvest and burn your worries away!
The show opens at 6 p.m. Friday, November 9, and runs several weekends: November 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23 and 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show is located at the Expo New Mexico Fairgrounds Fine Arts Building.
