What i don't understand is back in the 80's when the population was smaller there where 4 grocery stores in Alamo. They were IGA Farmers market on 10th and Cuba, Safeway on 10th and Washington, Furrs on 10th and College and Super 8 on North Florida and Indian Wells.
We have two Lowe's as well in Las Cruces. Unfortuately, both are terribly overpriced. Unlike Alamogordo, we also have three Albertson's, like Lowe's, terribly overpriced. Albertson's used to have a location on White Sands Boulevard at 10th street, but it was closed about a year before I moved to La Luz. The Lowe's in Alamo, I have to say, was pretty underwhelming. Every time I went in there to shop, there was a rank odor emanating from the place.
Yes, Albertson's is REALLY overpriced.....the Midland store certainly was.
I go to Lowe's occasionally to get some spices and a very few other items that are not available at Walmart.
Yep, that's what I thought when I heard about it, too, Catman.....two different companies entirely.
The Lowe's (big yellow sign) grocery store is on 10th street, and has been there for quite some time, apparently.
There is also the Lowe's hardware (big blue and white sign)/home improvement on Scenic/White Sands, too!
I thought the same thing when I needed blinds for the house. I googled it and ended up in front of a grocery store, I thought for a second they had been bought out, but then someone directed me to the real Lowes next to Home Depot. Funny!

I hope the heck you had a LOT better luck than I did with blinds from Lowe's.
They finally got them right....and the main office in another state ended up calling me, apologizing for the really incompetent way my order was handled.
If I had to do it over again, I would have gone to either Interior Accents or Budget Blinds.
Since the Lowe's in both Midland and south Austin are so good at what they do, I was really surprised to have such a @#$# time with them here.
Contrary to what was said earlier, you CAN grow fruit in NM. I am in Alamogordo and have two Apricot trees that bear a ton of fruit! Also, I know from doing it in the past, you can grow peach trees with no effort too. Apples, grapes and many others grow here beautifully. And don't forget the many nut trees that grow well here. i.e. Pecan and Pistachio.
Hope this helps.

What kinds of bugs do you have to deal with? (When we lived in Tucson we had tons of earwigs, ants, and scorpions.) Can you take care of most problems with non-toxic/natural pest control?
Are evaporative coolers adequate to keep a home cool in the hottest months? It looks like the more expensive homes have air conditioning.
What are the major grocery stores?
Thanks so much for any input - it will be quite a change from the Colorado mountains, but we just can't take these winters much longer!
You can definitely grow fruit trees in southern NM. We had peach, apricot, and plum trees in our yard in Las Cruces. The biggest problem was an early warm spell prompting all the trees to bloom, followed by a late freeze that kill the blossoms and no fruith that year.

She asked if you could grow citrus trees here....and the answer to that is still no.
Non-citrus fruit trees are another matter entirely.
What variety of apricot grows best here? I'd love to put in maybe an apricot and a peach at some point.
