Weare planning to move to N.M. but we would at least like to live 40 minutes at most away from excellent medical care and facilities. A small village would do. Can anyone please sugesst the pos and cons of where to live in N.M. so you get the best health care if needed.
Where are the best hospitals in N.M. and Doctors?
We have found this to be the biggest challenge for us..Maybe others can shed light on this subject also.
My wife has arthritis and needs good medical care and finding a doctor that is "accepting" new patients is a problem.
We are in Grants now and have to go to Gallup for one doctor and to Abq. for 2 other doctors as no one around here is taking new patients.
Dental we have to go to Abq. also...+++ the fact that many do not take her :med-advantage plan which is basically a plan for disabled who are on SS but do not qualify for medicare...another problem with our health care system.
I would say Abq, and ?maybe Las Cruces would be the best bets. Have heard that even Silver City is getting hard to find doc's.
The main reason for lack of doc's is the low pay that most get compared to other places, and the increasing need for medical care by all residents.
A friend of mine who lives in Cloudcroft has to go to El Paso for his doctor.
The small towns that we are close to just do NOT have health care...Quemado, Magdalena, Datil, etc. are great but lacking..
Make calls, go online to find clinics etc.
But the trade off's are still better living here in NM then other places..
lots of sun today..

Interesting question that you ask. We apparently don't have a system for reporting health-care-acquired infections, which is something I would like to know before I went into a hospital. A pilot project is just starting.
I went to St. Vincent's in Santa Fe and had a great surgeon. But what does that mean? Some people call it St. Victim's. It probably all depends on the experience you had.
Maybe some of the insurers keep statistics?? Does anyone know how to access those?
Excuse me for posting twice in a row on this subject. But just today the Washington Post had an article on hospital errors and what Medicare and other insurers are going to do about them.

Perhaps these efforts will result in better care and better information for the consumer.

Alamogordo's hospital ''Gerald Champion Regional Center'' is really getting better. It's about 10 years old and has already expanded 3 times since it was built. It also serves Holloman AFB as all the Airforce personel go there now and was reciently one of three NM hospitals just designated a Trauma Center.
So any retirees out there wondering about Alamo and it's health facilities as you can see it's really improving there.
I forgot to mention the hospital at Los Alamos. Excellent with very high standards of care. But it serves a small population and you can't count them having the specialization that you need. For my operation, Los Alamos was not an option.

Albuquerque and Las Cruses are your best bets. Albuquerque has some very good hospitals but the shortage of doctors throughout the state is a serious problem. We live about 40 miles south of Alb in Belen. We have some doctors, depending on what type of insurance you have and are about 45 minutes from the hospitals in Albuquerque. If you live outside the Alburquerque area and need specialized care you may have to travel here for any, even if you live in Las Cruces. There just are not enough specialists to go around.
We have never noticed a shortage of doctors or medical care in the Santa Fe area. (We live 20 miles north of the city.) We came here and found a nearby GP and dentist without any trouble or wait. Whenever we have needed a specialist, we got an appointment months quicker than we had in the east -- in our case, moving a lot -- Virginia, Vermont and New Hampshire.
Also we have Medicare and every doctor here has accepted it without question.
You definitely cannot find every specialist in every city -- but that is a inescapable consequence of the low population numbers and density of the state. We just don't have enough patients to support every specialist everywhere. So research the availability of specialists carefully before you come here. Every hospital will display its specialists on its web site.
