You've obviously never been to Silicon Valley. In my town and surrounding towns there is literally zero graffiti and zero evidence of any crime whatsoever. There probably were gangs in San Jose back in the old days, but most of them were priced out of there in the past 10-20 years. The only place I know of around here with a gang presence is East Palo Alto but you never see any evidence of it here in Silicon Valley. You don't even see any evidence of it in Palo Alto which is right across the freeway from it.

You're in denial and not looking hard enough:

I can tell you for a fact nothing like that happens around here (Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Cupertino, and adjacent towns).
Santa Clara County is large. It borders East Palo for one thing. I've heard of teen robber groups that target people on the BART in Oakland, but no suprises there - it's Oakland.
But here in Silicon Valley, there's no evidence of any of that kind of stuff. in fact, Sunnyvale itself is ranked as one of the top 5 safest towns in the country. There's so much money and affluence around here, any proliferance of crime would not be tolerated. Furthermore, the vast majority of people living here have no financial reason to commit crime.
Contrast that with NM where there is a lack of money, lack of jobs, a lot of drug addiction (likely a result of the the first two things), which means it's more ripe for crime.

This says nothing about your probability of being a victim of crime on BART and how this probability compares to other places. You could go walking around a bad neighborhood in Oakland tomorrow, have nothing bad happen to you, and falsely conclude that your chances of being a victim of crime are the same as walking around Boulder, CO (or pick whatever neighborhood you currently live in).
