We are retired and planning a move to New Mexico (probably Alamogordo) in the near future. We previously lived in Arizona (Cottonwood/Clarkdale) and are familiar with the southwest. I've been reading posts here about Alamogordo - some good and some not so good. Our reasons for choosing Alamogordo are affordable housing cost and weather. Also, love proximity to mountains. My question is this... are there any other places in New Mexico where housing costs are comparable with Alamogordo that might be a better choice, and the second question is - why? Much appreciate any help and information.

Las Cruces, being the 2nd largest city in the state, has comparable housing prices and a much wider choice of housing than Alamogordo. It also has better medical and other services that retirees might need. It also has the advantage of being closer to the much larger metropolitan area of El Paso.
