It's not as if something like this happened 10 years ago and as a result we have guidelines on what works and what doesn't - this is unchartered territory - governments have done the best they can and we're learning as we go.

You're acting like the Governor is the only person in the world taking these precautions. Neither of you have the faintest grasp of epidemiology. Neither of you offer a proven viable alternative to the Stay At Home order that has been pretty much put in place worldwide. What's the smarter way? We're still just hoping this method works sufficiently. Stop whining.
I would agree...I'm certainly no epidemiologist, neither is the governor....and, yes, this is uncharted territory....BUT, people can't stay locked up forever as wards of a nanny state. Let people take responsibility for their own health. If the risk in their mind is too great they can stay home or take whatever precautions they deem necessary. Personally, the whole mess has not affected me one little bit economically or otherwise so there's no whining about my situation..... but there ARE a whole lot of people suffering because the shutdown.

My opinions....you don't have to agree with them, but they're not any more "off-base" than the initial models that predicted the Apocalypse.

Just what in the heck are you talking about?? Before this started New Mexico's economy was one of the top five fastest-gowing in the country for the past three years. New Mexico was also in the top 10 in adding jobs last year and in recent years.

People like you need to pay attention and quit trying to try trash New Mexico with out of date information that was based on data from years ago when we actually we're having a bad economy.. New Mexico has been doing very well and leading the country in the last 3-4 years or so.

And look at this recent thread in the City vs City forum on this site. It presents information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and shows New Mexico as one of the only states to actually add jobs in March, when most others were hemorrhaging jobs:

https://www.city-data.com/forum/city...owth-loss.html

As you can see, New Mexico was third among just 17 states that managed to add jobs in the month when this all started, adding 3,500 jobs.

New Mexico's economic growth in recent years has allowed it to finally surpass $100 billion in GDP. New Mexico actually has the 37th largest state economy in the nation. We are 36th in population, which means we aren't doing so bad, with only Nebraska as a smaller state that has a larger economy than our state.

https://www.city-data.com/forum/city...19-states.html

Per capita, New Mexico is 42nd in the nation at $50,201 in productivity per person. For comparison, Arizona isn't much higher at $51,180 per capita GDP. That's less than a $1,000 difference in productivity per person. Yet nobody trashes Arizona the way they do New Mexico.

If my data is outdated I stand corrected. I used the rankings from a US News and World report that apparently only used data up to 2017....so yes a bit old. However, I still stand by my point about the needless suffering an extended lockdown is causing a lot of people in NM. Let's see what the economic numbers look like when this is all over.

Through May 9 (latest available data) New Mexico was 42nd highest nationally in percentage of workforce that has filed unemployment claims since March 1, or 16.3% of the workforce.

Compared to Georgia, which ranks 1st, with 40% of the workforce filing claims in the same period.

The worst unemployment rate ever seen in the US was in 1933 during the Great Depression, at 25%.

Part time yes. We are talking drive in movies where you stay in your car with the windows up. I like netflix myself so I have not been to a movie theater for years but Tucson has had a drive in reopened recently. I passed through New Mexico a few weeks ago on my way to Oklahoma. Here there are drive in churches all over.

That is rather draconian. People need to be able to stretch their wings a bit. I read that 30% of Americans have depression issues now. If the government does not let them they will do it anyways underground. If a few push it should everyone suffer?

I think they will. I asked a question on CL in the political section last week if the way your state government has handled the pandemic led you to change parties. Overwhelmingly people claimed they were unhappy with how the democrats handled things. I was surprised. I am not with either party. We will see in November.

KRQE did a survey earlier this month with over 3,300 respondents. 70 percent supported the governor in taking it slow to open the state.

https://www.krqe.com/news/albuquerqu...exico-economy/

New Mexicans seem to be mostly in agreement with the governor so far. I really don't see how the measures taken will hurt the governor politically. What will affect the governor is whether she can help the economy to rebound to a reasonable level in a timely manner and also adequately handle the budget situation and fiscal health of the state because of this crisis.

As for drive-in theaters, there is a portable or pop-up drive-in movie theater that has operated in the Albuquerque area recently. I don't know if the governor or her staff were aware of that fact or not. I also don't know if it is continuing to operate. In the story below by KOB-TV the operator says he encountered problems initially with one site. He also seems to be aware of the issues and knew that it might be contrary to what the governor's order allowed. The story is from May 10th.

https://www.kob.com/albuquerque-news...inema/5726056/

The issues obviously are that they are afraid of creating here in New Mexico what has happened elsewhere. And that is, despite being a drive-in movie theater where we can socially distance in our cars, many of these places are actually seeing people out of their cars, socializing with each other and gathering in large groups in close contact with one another.

The drive-in movie experience seemingly would be an ideal way to deal with this aspect of the entertainment economy, if only people stayed in their cars. Concessions could be handled in much the same way as curbside pickup and outdoor dining are being handled now. If not, then how hard would it be to just simply bring your own snacks and food and stay in your car?

MVD to reopen most places but will remain closed in Dona Ana County due to continued rise in cases. Something I predicted weeks ago since so many people here think this is a joke.

https://www.lcsun-news.com/story/new...ty/5270014002/

However, the continued spread of COVID-19 in Doña Ana, McKinley and San Juan counties has made it unsafe to reopen offices in those counties. Appointments that had been scheduled at the affected offices have been canceled and will need to be rescheduled.

The Las Cruces Sun had been reporting daily case numbers for Dona Ana very prominently on their website, but if they are still doing so its so well hidden that I can't find it. From the NMDOH website I see that cases are up more than 25% in the past 10 days, so I guess that means its all over!
