Things are not becoming "laid back" in New Mexico. The stay at home order and closures are gonna continue here until at least May 15th. Please obey the advice and orders of our leaders in this state and do not travel to or through New Mexico just to "destress" That is not a valid reason to disobey the orders in place right now. Be an adult and be responsible. Now is not the time to be taking road trips.

I can't imagine they would be turning people away. I don't think the feds have the authority to do so. They are looking for human and drug smuggling.

Right, but those are border patrol, i.e. checking for human cargo and drugs coming in through Mexico. Completely irrelevant to the OP's situation.

I can tell you from personal experience that essential means most businesses and there is no actual enforcement limiting people away from their homes. I am actually fine with that. Watching videos of people getting cited or arrested for being alone in a park or at the beach is very disturbing and over reach.

Yeah, I think I may have worried for nothing. It happens a lot with me.

No they were asking about the I-10 checkpoint which has nothing to do with Mexico. They stop everyone coming back from Las Cruces towards Arizona near Deming.

A long time ago, way before COVID-19, I used to go through checkpoints along a US highway in TX. Most times the instructions said to just stop, and the worker would just wave me on. A couple of times I was asked if anyone else was in the truck (it had a topper). They appeared to be looking for illegals being smuggled.
The obvious presence of a mountain bike and camping gear probably caused some to just wave me on as merely a tourist, which was correct.

Totally agree! Part of NM (Navajo Nation) is struggling with the disease to the point that they have instituted curfews. I know the res is not near the OP’s intended route, but you can’t know how many infected, possibly asymptomatic, people from there went elsewhere.
I live over the border in CO, and even though we are used to seeing plates from our border neighbors, it makes us angry to see what obviously are Arizonians—and Texans—treating the time off from work as a vacation, heedless of spreading the virus elswhere. And we ARE seeing a higher proportion of AZ plates than usual. It is that noticeable.
AZ has lots of beautiful places to destress, places that WE are foregoing traveling to. Please stay in your own region.

Here in AZ I am seeing more California plates. It is concerning that people are escaping the Los Angeles area and coming over here. Big concern being they are a hot spot now.

Right, but so-called "border" checkpoints often are located away from the border at the approach to the nearest city (for ex., San Diego) or at stops on main arteries north of the border. Otherwise, why check Las Cruces cars & others with US plates, heading toward AZ?
