We will be relocating to Silver city or Deming soon. My wife and I really like to fish, and wondered if there were any good fishing spots near these towns. Thanks for any info on this subject Kbbhere

Silver is close to Bear Canyon/Bill Evans and Lake Roberts...all have stocked rainbows and catfish. Bill Evans is where the state record Large Mouth was caught, although the big ones there are few and far between. The real warm water fishing is in Caballo and Elephant Butte reseviours on the Rio Grande. About 2 hours away from you. The White Mountains in AZ are phenomenal for cold water fishing and are also a couple hours away.
Sadly, the fishing in New Mexico is not as good as other surrounding states. Partly lack of water and partly not as good management techniques. Other states are close though, and out of state licenses are cheap in all of them.
Funny me, none of this stops me from trying a dozen times a year at least and if you're really a fisherman, it ain't gonna stop you either.

PM me if you would like more detail. I've been fishing this country for 20+ years. I would be more than happy to share techniques etc.

A good friend of mine loved to fish and constantly went to Elephant Butte Lake. Not exactly next door to those towns but he seemed happy with the place.
Last time I went to the marina there was this HUGE fish at the surface of the water looking up at me. Don't have a clue what it was, but it was dark with an upside down light colored "V" marking on its nose. DH thinks it was a bass but I don't fish soo can't say for sure!

Thanks for the replys.... Do you know about how far Bear Canyon, Bill Evans and Lake Roberts are from Silver City and Deming? I am partially disabled and connot walk too far. Is there any fishing close to where you would park? I still will need to get in a little fishing or I will go nuts. Thanks TKO and Winnie.

Bill Evans is maybe half an hour and you could pull up and fish there without any problem, I've been with my buddy Jim who's in a chair and we didn't have any trouble. It's not as scenic as the other two. Lake Roberts and Bear Canyon are both within an hour and are both very accessible too. For Deming add an hour to get to all three of these as you would first have to go through Silver to get to them.

Well, if you were to go the Bear Canyon or Lake Roberts from Deming, you wouldn't have to go through Silver first to get there. You can cut off at the turnoff to City of Rocks and go through Mimbres. It's a lot closer that way to both Bear Canyon and Lake Roberts.

I cant help but ask "City of Rocks"? Is that a real city or is it refering to something else? Also to you or others who know Silver City, on a scale of one to ten, ten being the best, what would you rate it as far as everything combined -employment, crime, shopping, medical, weather, home prices, etc. Are the people friendly? Thank you very much!

Right you are Lamesa, but I think it would still be about an hour further than from Silver.
City of Rocks is a large formation of giant boulders between Deming and Silver City, it was caused volcanic activity and is really cool.
The main employment in Silver is Phelps/Dodge who run a number of large open pit copper mines in the area. When copper prices are good, there are well paying jobs, when the price goes down, so do the jobs. Silver's economy is very dependant on these jobs. Crime is probably a little heavy for such a small town but nothing terrible. Mostly kids IMO.
Weather is four distinct seasons. Shopping is relatively limited but there is a Wal-mart. Better shopping is available within a couple hours. Medical is typical for a small town with a decent medical center, more advanced hospitals and specialists are also within a couple hours. Real estate is pretty reasonable, but has been increasing as of late.
And yes, the people are very friendly, I think you'd find that throughout southern NM. I get comments from my customers in Cruces constantly about how much more friendly people are than where they came from (usually CA).

Thank you TKO for your honest answer. Silver City sounds like a nice town. Someday I hope to check out the City of Rocks. Sounds neat!
