For any considering Valencia County as a place to live, unless you are considering a municipality with a police force (e.g., Los Lunas, Bosque Farms) the news continues to be dire for the Sheriff's Department. This is a serious safety issue for residents living in the rural areas of the county.
LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) - With too few deputies and too many calls the situation is dire in Valencia County, according to Sheriff Rene Rivera.
It's gotten so bad on some shifts there are only two deputies on duty for the entire county. At times that's leaving residents waiting for hours for help if help comes at all.
Rivera said Valencia County should have between 60 and 90 deputies. Instead it has 39, which is why he recently went to the Valencia County Commission to ask for help.
"We have way too many calls for the deputies that we have," Rivera said. "I went and I asked for 10 positions, and they (County Commission) flat out came out told me at this moment they couldn't do it due to the budget," Rivera said.
