A big part of this I think - now having lived in both very mild/sunny year-round Albuquerque as well as being back in the frigid upper midwest - is the year-round climate.
Even in the colder areas in NM like Santa Fe or Taos, the sunshine is out so strong most any day of the year. That ever-present blazing, warming sunshine just alters the body and mind so much and increases mood ten-fold.
And then in the warm-weather towns like Albuquerque, Socorro, Rio Rancho, Las Cruces, Carlsbad, etc., you just don't have to deal with the consistent cold, frigid, snow, ice, ultra-short-days, gray, overcast, rainy, humid, crappy days like you do in so much of the nation.
Spend some warm, sun-filled days in ABQ with folks enjoying time outside and you learn why "manana" goes so well with the laid back vibe of ABQ and New Mexico in general.
Enjoy EP - At least I know why I dont enjoy New England so much any more. Yesterday started with snow and would up with very cold rain.
God, I hate that "very cold rain" stuff. Seriously, I would actually take snow - as much as I hate that stuff - over "very cold rain" any day.
Seriously, when it is 37 degrees and rain is falling heavily, isn't that the most miserable stuff in the world? I would actually take 15 degrees and sun over that.
Ugh. Winter in these parts Greg, it is just miserable. I am going to be in Albuquerque all of next week - every day 60 degrees for highs and sunny. My friend, compared to the miserable joke that this winter has been up here, that's going to feel like the Bahamas.
EP - the closest I ever got to a Milwaukee winter was back in the Pleistocene at Great Lakes Navy base in December. I thought the glaciers were coming back.
Huh? I have no idea what you said here. I am a native, am Hispanic and friendly. I don't feel reserve or caution for anyone. You may speak for yourself, but you don't speak for most of the natives I know. We are friendly. You sound like you have some issues catagorizing people. Take people for who they are and not what category you think they belong in.
EnjoyEP: I agree that a cold rain is a miserable experience, but it isn't nearly as bad as freezing rain. Three days ago, here in Ft Worth we had freezing rain followed by sleet. The Wednesday morning "rush hour" was a disaster. Last I heard, 1.3 million people northeast of here don't have electricity and it won't be fully restored until mid-February! Freezing rain is the worst form of precipitation there is, IMO.

Santa Fe is an awesome city. Yes New Mexicans are truly friendly and I love all parts of this state. In addition, the posters here are awesome and quite hilarious to say the least.
