I have been thinking of moving to New Mexico. I currently live on the east coast and really like the west better. I travel about 5-6 months a year for my job so looking for a nice quiet place to spend the 6 months I am off. Looking to be near skiing if possible. Safety would be a plus, though I've lived in Baltimore,MD and Washington DC, and was able to cope. Any ideas are much appreciated.

Santa Fe and Taos are certainly beautiful, but the cost of living there is very high. Crime is pretty bad too. Same with Ruidoso.

I've heard good things about Glorietta and Cloudcroft, but I have no firsthand experience myself.

You might also consider places in Colorado. Winters are harsher up there, but they still have great summers.

I'd say exactly what Mark S. said. Durango, Colorado is a nice city with a great ski resort and not as cold as most of Colorado. Red River, Pecos-Glorieta are some other areas worth checking into as well.
