Moving there from Northern Virginia and am trying to find areas to live (rent) within a 20 minute commute of Kirkland AFB. I'm not familiar with the area and would appreciate some good insight/advice! Thanks!

Hi dadsjoy! Welcome to the Forum.

I am afraid I cannot give you any advice. We lived in that area 37 years ago, and the neighborhood where we lived (our apartment was on Chama St) is a pretty rough neighborhood now. I hope you will get some good advice, because I think there are some areas around the base where you DON'T want to be.

Just wanted to say hello because your message brought back some happy memories for me of our time in ABQ when my husband was stationed there and we were just practically still kids.

It's Kirtland, by the way ..... with a T.

Dadsjoy.... i can assist you as i live and work all around the AFB and i'm in the apartment industry so i have a pretty good take on which ones are good and which ones are bad. You mentioned 20 min drive so i would use the Wyoming Gate to Wyoming Blvd and go over Interstate 40 and that general area is your best bet (wyoming, eubank, juan tabo as north-south corridor streets and lomas, constitution, menaul, commanche as the east-west corridor streets.

You also mentioned hiking trails in your other posting so you may want to go up to Four Hills area on Central and I-40 (my personal favorate area of ABQ). Both these areas are about 20 min from kirtland AFB and again the Wyoming gate and not Gibson or Eubank gates will be your best bet getting out to the areas you are looking at.

Post if you need more info or send me a PM and i'll assist if i can again as i live and work there in the southeast hieghts (since june 1999) and know the area like the back of my hand and can tell you anything you need to know good or bad around the Base.

Try this zip code mapping tool provided by the city:

http://vistagrande.cabq.gov/website/newgen/viewer.htm?ActiveLayer=45&Layers=00000000000000000 00000000000001111000000010001000100000000000000000 00000001 (broken link)

It's not the best tool, but you can find what your looking for if you navigate a bit. As a personal recommendation, I offer up the 87112 zip code as I have lived in the area for the past 7 years and use Eubank gate on a regular basis.
