Santa Fe High School's Mascot has always been a "Demon" and Espanola Valley High School has always had a "SunDevil" as a mascot. Prior to 1975 Espanola's old High School mascot was a hornet.
Both High Schools are in Northern New Mexico and its once again being brought up in meetings and petitions, both schools used to be in the same district.
During the past 6 years there have been proposals to change both school's mascots to something else because of personal and religious issues of "some" community members of both Santa Fe and Espanola. Currently the change has not been implemented because of opposition from students.
Sounds like 'some' of these people need to get a life and find something constructive to do with there time and energy.
Worrying about school mascots?? That's piddley.
These are people that probably go into a salon and take an hour or so to pick a color. What a bunch of morans.
Be afraid...be very afraid. Rattle your beads and consult your Moderator cut: Political content removed witch doctors. Have we really descended to such rubbish and superstitious prattle in the 21st century??? How pathetic.
A family started going to our church a few years ago.
They were not comfortable with our Halloween festivities (more specifically the word Halloween being used). So they rammed Fall Festival down our throats.
They left the church last year (not because of us, they were a military family). Needless to say, I can't wait for the Halloween Festival this year!
This was an issue at the high school I used to interpret for in Texas several years ago. They were the Richland Rebels and their mascot was a confederate soldier and rebel flag. The school was diverse, probably not as diverse as some but still... But outsiders still petitioned to get the mascot changed to something more benign and not a "racist" symbol. All of the students fought hard to keep it - black, white, brown... they really banded together. When I left (1993) they were still the Rebels... not sure now but I think they still are. If people would focus the energy they spent on trying to a mascot changed to something more contructive and world-wide we might not be in the mess we are in now... Same with Christmas - in Seattle, after years of having Christmas cube decorating contests, it was decided because we had 'visitors/employees' from other countries that didn't celebrate Christmas, we could not decorate anymore so that we didn't offend them... Really? I can't offend them? If they had celebrated their religious holiday I wouldn't have blinked an eye - or maybe I would have asked questions to learn more about it but really, I couldn't celebrate MY holiday for fear of offending someone that didn't even live here??? It was like we were all hanging Jesus on the cross - we were putting up reindeer & Santa Claus... Sorry off-topic: Anyway, for my two cents worth on the mascots- I think its silly. Let's put our energy on something like the environment or world-peace... or getting kids to graduate from school... something...
My elementary school in Farmington used to have a "Raider" as a mascot. It was sort of a Teddy Roosevelt lookin' guy on a horse waving a saber. The crybaby mommies and daddies thought it was too violent and insensitive and forced a change to a panther. I suggested a jellyfish to represent something more spineless but was voted down.
