I would suggest studying as many US Dept of Ag publications on pig raising as you can get. This is where I would start if I were going to farm animals.
NO YOU DON'T WANT TO RAISE PIGS!! Take it from me, and old Iowa farm boy, you don't want to go there. They stink like heck (you'll never get the smell out of your barn, house, car, etc), they are destructive as all get out (they can tear up a fence, feeder, or waterer quicker than anything else in the world) and they are mean! (Don't ever get between a sow and her piglets). Oh ,sure they are cute when they are young (for about 10 mintues) then after that they are a PAIN IN THE ***. And when it comes time to market them, if they aren't sick, they won't pay you anything anyway. So unless you need to lose a bunch of money, love flies, want ti hack off every neighbor in a 5 mile radius, and want everything you've worked so hard on to be torn up, don't raise hogs!
I kind of remember a hog farm in the neighborhood where I grew up. They were fed on raw resturant waste. August evenings with in a couple of miles were unplesant and you did not get used to the smell. What hogfarmer says is true.
I am glad somebody raises the beasts because they cam be made into so many usefull things. Like footballs, jackets, sausage and pizza topping. Chickens make more sense, if for no other reason, they are smaller than you.
The authorities say that you can't get swine flu from them. It doesn't work that way.
Of course pigs are nasty if they're fed raw restaurant waste and left in filthy conditions, as any animal would be. They don't have to be that way.
