I saw New Mexico as #19. I wonder who they tested. I saw some seriously bad driving when I lived in Carlsbad. There were a lot of rollovers and one car wrecks reported in the newspaper.
Well...I do wonder if there is actually a high, positive correlation between "knowledge of driving laws" and how good drivers really are. I don't think it's that simple. There might be a better correlation between quality of driving and whether or not traffic laws are enforced at a consistently high rate.
However, what may be truer is that there is a larger proportion of really bad BDI (Brain Dead Idiot) drivers here than in other places.
In other words, NM may have 8% BDID's, while Phoenix might only have 5%.
92% of drivers here may be just fine - compared with 95% of drivers in Phoenix - almost the same.
Using those numbers that I just pulled out of my nose, NM has 60% more BDID's than Phoenix.
I'm probably being conservative here. My new commute is only about 7 miles. I pretty much can't drive home without some undesireable interaction with another driver cutting me or someone else off, running a light, getting frustrated with my casual attitude toward the red light that is going to bring both of us to a dead stop,etc.
Many times in my Phoenix commuting, I could arrive home without experiencing so much as one "what an idiot" moment.
That's one reason I prefer riding my bike and riding the bus. I'm mentally removed from that stress. Managing one's stress is one of the most important things a person can do in life for themself.

Good point. GMAC might have been better off just compiling their list based on a comparison of insurance rates.

I think bad drivers are everywhere. Knowing traffic laws isn't the same as observing them, and being able to pass a driving test certainly doesn't mean that one drives that way any other time.
I think these types of studies are so phony it isn't funny. As for NM drivers, I never thought they were all that bad, of course you have to get the drunk drivers off the roads.
