Nice, Dracul. Apparently I've already repped you, cuz it wouldn't let me.
But, it sounds like it's time to change your 'location'? On CD, I mean?

Default T or C info from resident of 2+ yrs

Hey there; i came to TorC 3 yrs ago and fell in love with it. Moved from small town on central coast of CA. If you don't like small town living you won't like it here, but I DO like small town living. Friendly people; eclectic characters; nice growing arts scene; river runs thru it; plus 2 lakes nearby; 10 hot mineral water bath houses; nice walking town; monthly art walk. This is a place where you can disappear into the woodwork or be as involved an busy as you want to be. Walmart is opening in Aug. and there is supposedly a new hospital to be build soon enough. I miss being able to go out dancing to a rock'n'roll band; mostly country western around here...love the weather, though. Not as hot as Las Cruces but no shoveling snow like in No.NM. Hope this helps...

Got some bad...but not unexpected news from my ortho specialist: looks like the mitt will need surgery after all. Seems the scar tissue has hardened into stone and is preventing proper nerve/tendon function. Bummer. Not too keen on going under the knife AGAIN (it will be my 8th procedure!!!). Way too many injuries as a result of living my life in a tempest Think I'll get the MRI and seek a second specialist's opinion. My right hand is essntially my life...so any slicing/dicing leaves very little margin for error. I'm a little afraid to resume tattooing at this juncture but I've some recent requests. Small projects that I hope I can do even with this damaged hand. I would be lying if I were to say I'm not somewhat anxious about picking up where I left off...when I was whole. Now I feel strangely incomplete and inadequate, despite recent efforts at extreme fitness training and dieting. Though my right arm has become hugely strong (I can curl 130+ pounds with one hand!), the hand is still inhibited and is very clumsy. I'm having to relearn to use this appendage with its more limited ROM. It really gets to me sometimes. But I'll never give up, and the knife may be inevitable...again...alas.

The real truth about Truth or Consequences is that MOST businesses in the arts, healing arts, hot springs and so-called spas are doing business illegally. They either don't even have basic business licenses, register to pay or collect taxes, hire employees correctly, or follow anything close to professional ethics. And they definitely don't clean their facilities or require people to shower before entering hot springs. Remember, some still call them baths, and the locals definitely bathe in them - especially T or C's mental street population. A popular spring on the river failed a fecal coli bacterial test this year. The environment dept. admitted they hadn't inspected T or C's hot springs since 1991. And, clearly, the owners haven't taken initiative to upgrade themselves.

Two deaths in the hot springs within one year (July 6, '07 & Jan. 6, '08) should tell you a lot. And, anybody could see the deaths very likely could have been prevented. T or C folks like to say "give me your money, and you can do what you want". So, people pay $10., get no instruction or assistance from the drug-dependent staff and owners, and go "soak" for an hour.

In 109 degree hot mineral water, as you can imagine, not any Joe can stay in it for very long. Meanwhile, nobody's checking to see how the tourists are boiling in the water, and the next thing you know, Joe's having a heart attack. Looking around, he sees NO perceivable way to alert the staff of a medical emergency (or owners, if they're even in the building), and whamo, Joe collapses, and drowns in the tub!

There's so much WRONG with Truth or Consequences, it appears as one step takes them forward, two steps takes them back. Sounds kind of appropriate for the name of the town. It seems they are currently reaping some of the consequences they created from their untruthful behaviors.

No doubt, TRC (as the druggies call it) will die its brutal death of consequences because the people there refuse to get themselves legitimate - in numerous ways.

What's outrageous is that now they're getting tens of thousands of dollars to promote tourism - and they're promoting people who aren't even legitimate business owners, can't meet basic safety, health and sanitation regulations for hot springs, and mostly do their "business" by cash under the table. And, clearly, only certain businesses get promoted (the new insider control group).

And, the city officials: "they just look the other way".

Forgettaboutit - TRC will die its appropriate death. The hub of Sierra County is Elephant Butte and The Elephant Butte State Park and lake.

Take your money to the lake. There's still bargains.

T or C? Don't loose yourself thinking because there's some cheap real estate deals you could move there and have an easy life. The people will take you down, suck you down, or beat you down until you're just like them - too incompetent to try to get honest. Ann Wilson Shaaf once wrote a book called "The Addicted Society". Looks like T or C has exponentially taken the dive, and operates as a magnet for more addicts, more boomers who want to live outside the law, and mentally ill people who wait each month on their government disability check to continue their dysfunctional lifestyles.

Looks like some interesting alternative (counter culture as we used to say in the 60s) things happening esp. alternative energy. Keith Thompson: Totally Off The Grid at Ryan Is Hungry (http://ryanishungry.com/2007/05/22/keith-thompson-totally-off-the-grid/ - broken link)

Way to go localTRC. I've lived here and I can tell you I'm ready to move on.
This is a town that can really suck the life and energy out of a person. I've
never quite experienced anything like it before. Yes it's funky, but more than
that it seems to be a huge escape from reality. Mental illness is rampant here
and since I'm not bi-polar I don't feel I fit in very well. Also I had a job most
of my life and there are a lot of people here that could never make that statement unless they just wanted to tell another lie. Maybe things will take
off here but I've been here for over 4 years and I for one am tired of waiting.
There are better places but this time I will do my homework a little better.
And yes I also am prepared to sell my house like many others I now have met
that are ready to move on. By the way the cheap part is not as prevalent
as when I first moved here. Times are bad now so newcomers might find
a cheap place but I don't see them in the real estate mags anymore. Good luck to all the newcomers but I would seriously do your homework before
buying. Remember gas is not cheap anymore and the big escape to Las Cruces will cost you quite a bit more than it did one year ago and it will
probably just keep going up.

[SIZE=4]Truths about T or C. While I'm agreement with Crackerjack on some statements: people have died at or using the hot spings, man has to know his limitations! One shouldn't seek any type of therapy without consulting his or her doctor first! As for me, I receive a SS Disability check every month because I had a stroke and can't work, but, I don't spend my $$$ on dope. It's difficult enough for me just getting by with every-month living expenses without adding in the drug thing. I can barely afford my prescriptions. Maybe I'm the excption to the norm of people getting their disability checks and going to get their "fixes".
Is there are problem with the hot spring spas not being up to code, and city officials looking the other way because they want the tourism $$$? That's possible. Maybe Crackerjack knows more than I.
Is there a drug problem with T or C? I would have to agree. I know several business owners and business managers, and all have difficulties finding employees for clerk and stoking positions because a majority of applicants cannot pass a drug screen or a criminal background check. So, it is a problem.
Why am I here in T or C? I came for the moderate climate. I am old enough to know what drugs are, and what they can do to people. I stay away from that element here in T or C, and try to enjoy whatever good is possible for my surroundings.
One of the best kept secrets of T or C seems to be what a person can derive from it. Many, many old folks, and the disabled come here to escape harsh winters in areas they're from, some arrive as tourists, some come for the lake at Elephant Butte or Caballo, some come for the hot springs, and others come for a variety of other reasons. Mostly, T or C is best suited for snowbirds, who flock here from northern states. T or C has a very mild winter climate, and is usually very dry. T or C receives very little, sometimes no snowfall at all. Daytime temperatures rise to the mid 50's and lower 60's daily, and nite temps only get down to the low 30's, and occasionally, down to the mid 20's. The sun shines most of the time day to day.
Ideally, there are places to go, and things to see within an hours drive. From T or C going south on I-25, exit at #63, and go west to the Gila National Forest, take in Emory Pass Vista, day or nite camp or picnic at one of the many areas that Gila has to offer. My wife and my favorites are Railroad Canyon Campground, Iron Creek Campground, and Upper Gallinas Campground. Further west on State Highway 152 is State Highway 35 going north which will take you to the Gila Cliff Dwellings, and this is a must see. If you're really into sight seeing, from State Highway 152, Highway 35 go south to City Of Rocks State Park. City Of Rocks is a location where giant boulders from a volcano were cast away and ended up. The rocks strewn about resemble different shapes, one resembles the shape of a fist with a thumb up, but, if you visit there, you can use your own imagination.
If you are really wanting to get away from it all, a more secluded area awaits you. Go north from T or C on I-25 and exit at #100, go over the overpass to the other side, and on your right going north is New Mexico Highway 1. Take highway 1 north to Forest Road 225, make a left going west on 225 and follow it till it ends. You'll be in a place called Camp Springtime, in the Cibola National Forest. Springtime is a box canyon, one way in, one way out, for two wheel drive vehicles. In the early spring of 2007, we drove to Camp Springtime and there was still snow on the ground. There were bear tracks in the snow. As with any area in Wild New Mexico, be aware of your surroundings as there are many, many different species of wildlife. New Mexico has black bear, mountain lion, bobcat, javalinas, snakes, and tarantulas.
Other areas of interest nearby T or C are the ghost towns of Winston and Chloride. Chloride has The Pioneer General Store, and looks pretty much as it did many, many years ago.
T or C's Walmart store will be opening in mid August 2008, and T or C has many other fine business establishments that are friendly and cordial.
To mention a few, IGA, Bullocks Grocery, Hastys Auto Repair, H & O Tires and Feed, Whitehead Motors servicing GM Vehicles, B & B Sales for RV Repairs and Mobile Home Sales, Burkes Outlet Store, Los Arcos Restaurant, Bar B Que on Broadway, Hilltop Cafe, Ikard-Newson Propane Supplies, RJ RV Park, Cielo Vista RV Park, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Circle K, and Fast Stops.
Just a note; if you drink a lot of water, it is advisable to purchase bottled drinking water from retailers, or bring your own gallon or five gallon containers to the many purified water dispensers smattered throughout the town because T or C tap water has a very high mineral and chlorine content.
So, sitting around T or C waiting for something to happen or take you away is not advisable. Get out and go somewhere, do something. There isn't much nightlife in T or C, and not much happening daily either, you have to create your own form of entertainment.
