Hello. I recently moved to New Mexico approximately 3 months ago and am now living in Santa Fe. I am interested in relocating, but not knowing much about the state of NM I am having a hard time deciding. I am looking for a medium sized city that has a fairly low crime rate, along with a "as low as you can possibly get drug trade/use rate. Where I am at now, the crime rate isn't quite so bad but Heroin seems to rule here. I know I am not going to find a perfect city, but there has to be better places than Albuquerque. I would feel like I was back home living there. I am also looking for an area that has a good hospital. I am considering Farmington, but don't know much about the place other than they have a high death rate from drunk drivers "because of the roads being so bad and curvy" as I was told. I am open to suggestions on other places and appreciate any input I can get. You can email me at d_chisolm@hotmail.com or just write me herel.
Of those choices that you listed, Las Cruces would be your best bet.
Have you considered some others like Alamagordo, Clovis or Hobbs -- not as big but close enough to a larger metropolitan area for convenience.
I lived for 4.5 yrs in Albuquerque back in the late 80s/early 90s ....... haven't had a chance to get back, but I understand things have changed DRASTICALLY !

Thanks, Donna
Well, I lived in Portales, Hobbs-Lovington, Eunice, Roswell, Las Cruces, Albuquerque, and Los Alamos.
If I were to everrrrrrrrrrrr move back I would live In Los Alamos. Its the safest town, crime wise in the state. However a little more costly than some. Good schools and healthcare.
We left the state three years ago.
Los Alamos is a very nice place to go to. Although the lack of restaurants and all the crazy scientists running around are a negative. It is a very wealthy town. It is also still recovering from the fire a couple of years ago, so the forest isn't exactly in the best shape. It's really cold there, so if you don't like the cold don't go.
I have been here three and a half years and we have moved to our new hometown. We now live just outside Silver City, and love it here. Not a lot here in terms of shopping and restaurants, but Tucson and Las Cruces aren't that far away. I love living here, its quiet and beautiful.
We visited southwest NM a few years ago. We were most favorably impressed with Socorro because of NMT University and the local medical facilities. We stayed in a B&B in San Antonio while looking at the Socorro area. Then we stayed in Silver City before driving to Mongollon and back to Socorro. The lower cost of living index (80 vs. 120) is another attraction. We will likely be on a fixed income supplemented by part time work.
We are planning another trip to NM. We expect to look at the region northeast of Albuquerque and include the Turquoise Trail and the High Road to Taos as well as Raton, Cimarron and Las Vegas in our plans.
It's too bad Las Cruces appears twice in the poll, and our third largest city, Rio Rancho, isn't included at all.
If they run me out of town here in ABQ and I had to settle somewhere else, I guess I'd choose Santa Fe because of the food, and because it's a little cooler and moister there. Plus it has lots of radical wacko socialist hippies so I'm sure I'd feel right at home.
Location: northern Vermont - previously NM, WA, & MA

LOL. Looks like Santa Fe is where I actually may end up, at least when I first get to the state. I'm about to sign a short term lease on an apartment there. I'll be job searching in both Albuquerque and Santa Fe which will dictate where I end up long term.
I drove through Rio Rancho, it just seemed like extended Albuquerque IMO. If I had to move away from Albuquerque or Santa Fe after that, I honestly wouldn't mind living in Las Cruces, I enjoyed my time there while visting.

That is interesting, I thought you had settled on Albuquerque. What made you change your mind? Just curious...
Climate-wise, if I were Goldilocks, I think Albuquerque is "just right", while cold of winter lingers longer in Santa Fe, and Las Cruces does get much hotter.
