We will be tent camping and we are not comfortable camping primitive or without flushing toilets/showers for a week. We hope to get better at this so we can enjoy more of nature but for now we would like to be near water and shade also! Can someone suggest a few places we might enjoy? Just two of us in "midlife" who are not too courageous. We are rockhounds and love to hike near creeks, rivers, and lakes.
Thanks!

Check out the Mesa Campground in the Gila National Forest north of Silver City. There are flush toilets but no showers. You could always take a dip in Lake Roberts that is within walking distance. There are also shaded sites. Many places to see and trails to hike on.
A very beautiful location. Use the website below and scroll down.

Clayton Lake State Park has some excellent primitive camping spots. They do have toilets and showers also. Bring a rod!

Thanks so much for your suggestions!! I hope more of you, readers, will post your suggestions also! Do you think a KOA would be better for us "scardy cats"? Maybe one that has lots of shade not a desert landscape??

Oh gosh, you guys are coming to the right place. I'll give a few links for you to check out. City of rocks state parks has massive volcanic boulders, nice fully equipped bathrooms w/showers.
We don't know much about rockhound state park though, as we have never been there.

Nevertheless, you'll probably enjoy most any New Mexico State Park, as most are very nice places to camp.

Cool KOA in Silver City or others in T or C

I hear it's nice with seasonal pool. Truth or Consequences area has lots of camping places along lakes or Rio Grande River. Not sure about showers, but you can always take a soak in one of the hot mineral water bath houses and shower there. We like Percha Dam Site, it's south of Caballo Lake and lots of shady areas. We go for day as we live here so don't know about showers.

There is a really nice place on the Old Las Vegas Highway--between Santa Fe and Las Vegas.
It has a pool and showers and is so close to Santa Fe! You can get there by taking I 25 to the Clines Corner exit, just past the Bob Cat Bite, and then taking the access road toward Pecos.
Friends of mine stayed there a couple of years ago and I thought it was so much fun just to visit them there.
I hope something works out for you!

Most RV parks have tent sites and showers and a laundry room. Here is the best RV park review place on the web:
