Jaxart,
I know you know the area very well and thanks for posting all those wonderful places.
I only visited City of Rocks once, but it was amazing. I will go back. I have been to about a third of the places you listed. I would love to see the rest of your list sometime.

Seems like this is just another thread to divide us.
I wonder why we continue to do this..

Towanda: Good point. I like them both! Why should I have to make a choice?

I have thought along the same lines so often recently....
I love both northern and southern NM....each area has treasures in its own right.
I love both red and green chile....(though I have preferences in each)
I love New Mexican, Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine....all of 'em!
I love studying about all of the cultures....Navajo, Apache, Spanish, Mexican, New Mexican, et al.....

I am sorry I ever brought it up. ....I didnt mean to put a gun to your head. I guess it was a really stupid question asking for preferences like these. Isnt this how the civil war got started?? LOL

I could never choose between them. Two of my favorite landscapes are in the NE, near Capulin, and the drive southwest from SC towards Tucson. They are both drop-dead gorgeous.
Now if you guys really want to see a divisive thread [and Civil War related to boot], check this one out:

Many of the east coast forums on north/south issues can get kind of heated.

Catman is right. New Mexico has different things to offer around the state. I'll admit I'm not crazy about cold weather but lots of people like it just fine. It has desert, mesas, and 13,000 ft. mountains all around the state.
