We have lived here in Rio Rancho 11 years, we also have a home in Albuquerque and a home in Florida.

Coming to this NM area was made easier with my wife's job, a promotion and moving expenses. I semi-retired, did not take the initial job I was offered here. My wife's job entailed travel and I wanted to travel with her. I have 2 or 3 grand kids (depends on time of year) about five miles away. The school system is pretty good. Major airport close enough for our travels. Pretty good weather. I would prefer to have the ocean a few miles away, having lived in Florida and the Caribbean. My wife and I are private pilots and owned a small plane on the East Coast, so we both miss the aviation activity. I have another grandchild on the East Coast and another on the West Coast. I would like to be closer, but that won't happen. We had a large home in rural PA with some acreage which I miss on occasion, the snow was beautiful on occasion and miserable on other occasions. We lived a few miles from Ski Liberty, but we didn't ski much. I would like a few more nice restaurants closer, but Albuquerque, Corrales and Bernallio have enough near by. We have made friends here and to a degree there is a sense of community. There are a few miserable people which I just stay away from. I do some volunteer work with a few different organizations/groups which is satisfying. Rio Rancho has a low crime rate, and I haven't had any real problems. I don't really dislike too many places, I consider that for the unfortunates who just have to find fault on too many issues or just want to sit on their thumbs and flap their jaws. My wife and I are happy to be here and we are enjoying life. Anyone considering moving out really should make a visit to the area. I have been out in this area on various occasions in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's...

Thanks Poncho on your insights. We're in Clovis for at least another year or so. We're in our early 60s and have started looking around primarily in NM for retirement. Someone told me about a retirement area in Placitas - Dell Webb, worth a look at. We are middle-of-the-road liberals and I worked fervently in this area in the Obama campaign. I am not working but picking up an 'age-discrimination proof' occupation in the local college. Husband is Fed. We have no children. We're looking at areas such as Rio Rancho, Placitas, Ruidoso, Sierra Vista AZ - possible Henderson NV.

We visited Northern New Mexico a couple of years ago and the questions raised from that visit:

1. There's ALOT of poverty in New Mexico. ALOT. If there's no infrastructure in the state to address poverty - why should I think there's infrastructure to address senior services - if everyone wants to retire there?

2. HEALTHCARE FOR SENIORS... see #1.

It's a seriously beautiful state. But if there are no support services established within the state's infrastructure to handle in influx of people who want to retire there - why would I want to choose New Mexico?

There is a lack of certain types of medical services. There are waiting times. That could be siad about many places. ABQ has the majority of medical facilities... That is why I will stay close to the ABQ area. New Mexico is spread out, 5th largest state in the USA and about #38 in population. I have never told anyone to move out here... But I do say, you need to visit and you need to make your own choice...

NM has a large influx of legal and illegal Mexicans which probably contributes to this. At any rate "addressing" it is relatively easy when there is a large and prosperous base and few poor... but that isn't the case.

Completely different story. The over 65 crowd is the most prosperous age group in the country, and even the poorest ones get SS tax free and free health care... all from the feds. So it should be as good as any sparsely populated area.

Ruidoso is very un-liberal... if that matters to you. The town in NM that is most like Bisbee would be Silver City... though Bisbee is a little more "quaint" and Silver City is more isolated, Hispanic, and has much more beautiful surrounding mountains.

Defining exactly what is important to you in a place is over 90%...

Just a little correction here: yes, seniors do have decent health care in NM, if they live near one of the two or 3 cities, but don't get the idea our health care is free. Too many people seem to think medi-care pays for everything. That isn't the case. Most of us have sublimentary insurance and still pay co payments etc. Most of the rest is true..
