Why in the world would a remake of a classic - much less a classic in which John Wayne won an academy award - even be attempted? Can't the studios find anything of contemporary interest in the hundreds of "best sellers" published each week? No Country for Old Men was based on a such a recent novel.
I agree. Rarely can a new movie begin to match one of those classics. Imagine someone trying to remake "Gone with the Wind" but it's going to happen someday.

I just finished a book by T. Jefferson Parker that read like a plot out of a movie. All about gun running in the desert bordering Baja California. Title is "Iron River" - meaning the "flow of guns." The main character would make a great "True Grit" style character.
I'm normally passionately against remakes, but I like these directors. I wouldn't expect them to turn a grand old lady into a bimbo, so I'll eagerly await the results.
Plus, I seriously doubt more than a handful of people under 40 willingly watches John Wayne movies. If nothing else this remake will inspire them to watch the original and compare. I think that's far better than leaving the original collecting dust when John Wayne's moviewatching audience passes on.
^^ Or those over 40! Not sure if I ever saw True Grit. I will now, after the remake.
I'll give the remake a chance. Who knows, it might be good. But it seems to me that it is unnecessary, and as Mike Horrell says, the bar was raised pretty high by the original.
Agreed. Some newer versions of westerns do pretty well, such as the Gunfight At The O.K. Corral/Tombstone/Wyatt Earp efforts. Then there are others that should be left alone.
I'll have to wait and see on this one. True Grit is a classic, so they better not screw it up.
How long until they remake Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? You can bet your bippie that'll happen. Ben Affleck and Brad Pitt perhaps?
