Hi,

I live uptown and need two things: 1. a new termite contract and 2. an exterminator for routine spraying. Can someone recommend an exterminator that is good, honest, and reasonably priced?

Thanks!

We really like Orkin. Both guys we've had have been professional, polite, and know their business well. We use Bartlett for termites but we're switching to Orkin - I feel Bartlett is very unprofessional but they do a good job. No serious bug problems ever, just the few random ones that somehow find their way in.

DA Exterminating is one of the best but I'm not sure if he is writing new termite contracts south of the lake because of the formosan termite problems we have it the area.

To fight termites here you definitely can't afford to be penny-wise and pound foolish. It's a never-ending war, and only the most meticulous inspection, treatment, and monitoring regimen can hope to win it. The only company I and my friends found to be totally reliable is Absolute Termite Control based in Pontchatoula. For routine household exterminating no one beats Excel Pest Control based in Kenner in price + service + quality.

Just a final note from personal experience. Make sure you observe the work as it's being done and very carefully review the contract. Don't be afraid to ask questions. The consequences are simply too dire and costly not to.

I bought a house (big historic one Uptown) from a nice elderly couple who had had the house treated by and then maintained an annual contract with, hmm, shall we say an exterminating company with a large national advertising budget. A year later I decided to renovate and discovered the most hideous mass of termites infesting a wall. The inside was like mud and the studs had barely any structural capacity left. When I showed the company what had happened they told me that it was due to the shrubbery (boxwoods about 20" high) growing too close to the exterior side of the wall and that they could re-treat the house, but at substantial additional cost. I wondered what the worth of the annual contract was and even questioned whether they'd properly treated in the first place given the extent of the damage. I wanted to hold the company to task, but when I looked at the contract more closely there were so many loopholes and exclusions that in real-life practical terms the contract was basically worthless to the consumer.
