I'll be visiting the week of July 4th, with a 5 year-old and a toddler. What should we see/do?

Audubon Zoo is nice. http://audubonnatureinstitute.org/zoo

I've never been, but the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium gets rave reviews from everyone I know who has: http://audubonnatureinstitute.org/insectarium

I would imagine a 5 year old may enjoy a ride on one of the steamboats off the Mississippi River.

I'm glad you brought this place up, as I seem to forget about it myself. I know a few people who tell me it's worth the trip.

We are now thinking of cutting our stay short by a day, and taking the kids to a beach. Since will be spending the night, we are willing to drive 3 to 4 hours. Any suggestions?

The Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, Alabama area is the closest to New Orleans that is a nice family oriented beach.

I agree with this, but personally I would not cut a New Orleans vacation short to go to the beach. Take the kids to the cool zoo at Audubon for a couple of hours and then soak in the history of a great city. Just my opinion, and I'm definitely jaded.
