There are many, many acronyms in today's society. NOLA is simply another acronym used to replace the actual name. (example: NCIS ) Using letters to replace names is just a matter of 21st century lingo. I lived in NOLA during the '80's and I used it as a postal abbreivation then. I often use it in writing now, but I never, ever refer to NOLA in my speech. Neither do I say "Nawlins or New Or-leeeans".

True on the written part! I wouldn't speak it but on a good number bank deposit slips and letters I write, I do put "NOLA" instead of "New Orleans, Louisiana". Good point.

I started using it in writing a little while back. For me, it comes from "nola.com" which is the easiest place for me to keep up with the New Orleans news.

As a lifelong resident of New Orleans I can tell you that it is definitely locals who use it. It's also most likely only young people who use it the most. Facebook statuses such as "NOLA for the weekend" are very common for the typical NOLA (used it again) college student who goes to school out of town. It's definitely not ever spoken.

I've always referred to it as Yatville, the Crescent City, the City of Sin or just plain ol' Nawlins.

It's very new. And very goofy. My wife mused about maybe naming our kid Nola and I almost threw up.

In other news the City of New Orleans officially changed it's web address from www.cityofno.com to www.nola.gov
