How old were you when you when found out that:

1. people in other states looked at you weird when you asked for that sandwich dressed?

(21 in Houston. Actually the guy knew what dressed meant, but he made fun of me saying, "what like with a little coat and shoes?")

2. the neutralground was something called a median?

(17 I was on vacation, flirting with some guys. We arranged to meet at a McDonalds across the median so of course confusion ensued. They got aggravated with me and said, "The median! The median! You know that big patch of grass in the middle of the street!"

3. Uptown was not north?

I was in my mid twenties in a Louisiana History class. No excuse for not knowing; I promise at that time I could read a map. I guess it didn't click for some reason.

4. the West Bank was south and sometimes east?

5. what other people call snowcones, (ick), are not the same as snowballs?

I was probably about 9, in that Eight Flags Over Biloxi, (if anyone can remember that one) and had some crunchy frozen ball stuff with the nastiest syrup. It was bad enough that Dad commented on it and we got the lesson on the finer points of a good snowball. Other kids went to the candy store for treats; we went to snowball stands. Dad was picky about his snowballs, never turned one down, but had his favorite stand and a theory that if you added just a touch of unflavored jello to the ice water, it perfected the ice.

1. Hmmm, probably mid-twenties, on vacation in Mobile.
2. again, sometime in my 20s
3. seems like I always knew directions in N.O. were screwed up - we always used uptown, downtown, lake side, river side.
4. college, I think.
5. much later, maybe 30s when I got one with my kids and it was awful!

FUN QUIZ.

1) About 10. My dad traveled a lot and told me stories, so I knew kind of young.
2) About 10. Same reason as above.
3) I never thought uptown was north.
4) About 16. I was dating a girl from the Westbank, and when I drove to go pick her up I realized that the West bank was not West.
5) About 8. When the ice cream man offered that disgusting food-colored sugar water mixed with ice in a cone cup. That's when I realized it was nasssssty.
