Moving to New Orleans?? No clue where to Live (Slidell: rentals, houses)

I am 25, male, single, caucasian. I am moving to New Orleans for a job. I believe, I will be working near the airport, but willing to commute. Of course, I want area that is safe and well kept. It would be nice to live in area that is walking distance to bars, resturants or even taking public transportation(I dont drink and drive). I will be finding a aparment to live in, if you have any suggestions for places.

Nothing near the airport fits your wants. You will have to drive out there but the good news is that you will presumably be going against traffic if you work a day shift.

I would reccomend the Carrollton area close to the river, it's really dense in terms of bars, restaurants and things to do. It's also close to the earhart expressway which can get you out to the airport in a reasonable amount time. Also consider Mid-City near Canal St./Carrollton Ave., it's also an easy commute from here. It's a little less dense in terms of nightlife but there are still plenty of places to go and the Canal Streetcar can get you downtown in 20min which gives you more options.

I totally agree with the above post. I live in Riverbend and love it! There are lots of restaurants and bars within walking distance, and even more if you take the streetcar. It's also a very easy and quick drive to the airport during non-rush hours.

Good luck - it's SO great here! Also, thank you for being so conscientious about drinking and driving. I'm quite militant about that myself ;-) It's nice to be able to go out with friends and not have to be the DD because we can either walk or ride the streetcar!

I have been researching, Is around Maple Street a nice area. It seems is walking distance to some bars. Also the street car is a couple blocks away. Is there any streets you can recommend around that area or is there a better area?

Maple Street is awesome, at least the part near Carrollton/ St. Charles. There are all sorts of little neighborhood bars and shops, as well as a lot of houses. I live a couple of streets away from Maple and walk it all the time ;-)

Try google map/satellite and use the little man to scope out prospective neighborhoods and try Padmapper for some available rentals. the advanced search feature lets you set specific criteria. Left clicking on the red flags gives you a street side picture and a link to the walk score, plus takes you to the posters page. Both tools are very handy and easy to use.
