I am planning on moving to New Orleans in mid July and wonder if anyone has an opinion on whether or not, $500 is a reasonable number for utilities water, electric, gas, basic cable and internet. This would be for one person, one bedroom apartment/house/condo.

The reason for my question is I found several places that pay all utilities and they are about $500 more than ones that pay water only.

That seems quite high to me, but we don't have cable. The first house we lived in here was half a double (700 sq ft) in Broadmoor and we paid $750 with water, gas and electric included. That was definitely a deal b/c the owner needed to get someone in there for a short-term lease, but it was also over the hot months of summer when we ran the air a lot. I saw the water bill a few times and it was around $50 for our side.

We live in a pretty tiny place now, but our combined electric and gas bill was $35 last month.

Here's my general rule of thumb for utilities per month:

electricity - $50 winter $100 summer
gas - $50 winter $25 summer
water - $40
cable/phone/internet - $100 -$120

This is based on what I and a few people I know pay for utilities. Keep in mind that if you end up in an old house, you can pay more because those things are like sieves when it comes to insulation quality, and if you are in a complex you may pay less because you are sandwiched between other units. I had a friend in this situation who practically paid $50 a month for electricity and gas throughout the year because his neighbors were insulating, heating, and cooling his place.

I think that $500 a month is a bit much; the landlord is probably tacking on the homeowner's and flood insurance as well and didn't mention that to you. If I were you, I'd keep looking.

PS. Oh my GAWD Pointy Kitty, thirty-five dollars! I need to take some lessons from you on how to improve my electric bill! Any tips?

Thanks for the info, I was thinking of the convenience of a short term rental while I look for a more permanent place, but from what you two say it is probably not worth paying double for it.
I will keep looking.

Again thanks to both of you.
