What's your favorite watering hole in the New Orleans area and why?

Toss up between the Avenue Pub and the Bulldog (either location). Reason: both places have an extensive variety of stuff on tap. The outdoor seating is better at the Bulldog, but the Avenue Pub tends to be a little less crowded. The food is pretty good at both (well, good for pub food).

Depends on what kind of drinking you're into.

I'm a beer guy, so I definately second the Avenue Pub and the Bulldog. Also Cooter Browns has an excellent selection.

For pure atmosphere I like the Bayou Beer Garden and its massive outdoor deck and patio.

None in the immediate New Orleans area, but there's a decent one in Slidell called Mudbugs Saloon. It's about a 30 min drive from the city.
