I'm a semi-vegitarian, but I know vegans take it to the next level.

There's an African restaurant in the quarter called Bennachin thats very veggie friendly. Mona's on Frenchman St. serves middle eastern food with lots of veggie options. Cafe Bamboo was another good place, but I think it closed.

I definitely recommend Bennachin! There are also quite a few Asian restaurants here and there. Take the St. Charles streetcar to the Carrollton/ Riverbend area. You should ride out that way anyway because it's pretty breathtaking if you like gorgeous older houses ;-)

Just be sure any broth is vegetable, many places use the same chicken or beef broth for everything.

I visited New Orleans last month and am a vegan (for almost 15 years). New Orleans, while very famous for it's cuisine, is also a terrible town for vegans. I ate at Bennachin and it was decent. I also ate at Surrey's Cafe and Juice Bar, a small place that had maybe 2 or 3 items marked vegan on the menu. Food was also decent, but nothing to rave about. Perhaps you have run across this website: http://www.happycow.net/north_americ...a/new_orleans/

I unfortunately don't have any recommendations. For a town world renown for it's food, it is quite a let down to vegans. Try San Francisco or New York, both great towns for vegans. (and unfortunately, looks like I'm moving there this summer. I guess I'll be doing very little eating out for the next 4 years)

Back to the Garden, 833 Howard Ave, 70113. It's on the opposite side of the CBD from the Quarters, near Lee Circle and the train station. Safe to go during the day. Also, Whole Foods Market used to have a great little location on Esplanade, very near the quarter; but they shut it down. You can easily take the Magazine bus (#11) from Canal Street up town to the WFM at 5600 Magazine Street, 70115. Always vegan eats there.

I love Back to the Garden and order from there whenever I can because I usually don't have time to walk over for lunch. I love all the food except the cheese soup and the gumbo. Faves: tuna club, side salad w/honey french dressing, tacos and turkey burger. It's a good cheap lunch with delivery but I don't know if I'd recommend it as a destination spot.

Nor does it sound like you could recommend it as a "vegan" spot either, based on all the non-vegan food you mentioned.

The Green Goddess in the Quarter also has some good veg options.
