My partner of 7 years is going to Tulane Medical this August, so I am following. I have worked building maintenance at an institutional setting for 9 years, but I do not have a journeyman's card in any trade, nor any formal vocational training outside of a seminar here and a class there. I also have a 4 year degree in graphic design (but no design work experience outside of a few odd jobs, freelance), and I don't really want to do graphic design. I'd be looking for any blue collar work, but while I have a ton of work experience, a lot of knowledge and skills, good problem solving ability, and a good head on my shoulders, I don't feel I'm that marketable, and my best attributes you can't really write on a resume. As the cliche goes, Jack of all trades, master of none.

So, my question is, given that I have roughly 6 months to find a job before we move, what should I do? I was considering an apprenticeship with the local IBEW. Really, I'd be up for any other sort of apprenticeship that mixes paid on the job training with eduction. I also have been looking at the course programs at Delgado to improve my education on paper, but that would still leave me without a job. I've worked the past 9 years for the state government, so I'd be into doing that as well (or as you call it, the 'civil service'). Maybe find a job at the ports?

It is a bit overwhelming moving to a new city, and starting over. So any advice or job leads would be helpful.

What unions have shops out of New Orleans?

I've found the UA, IBEW, CWA and SMWIA locals, but what else, if any?

What about non-union trade schools? Is there just Delgado Community College? Anything else?

Thanks.
