I'm driving/moving from Los Angeles to Florida with my girlfriend and dog. My only must stop is New Orleans. I'm a foodie (vegetarian..will be making a seafood exception in New Orleans) and imagine the culture to be refreshingly unique.

Where would be a safe/clean, convenient, cheapish spot for us to stay for a night or two? Also, any MUST sees/eats are appreciated.

Our friend stayed here with her big dog just a couple of weeks ago. We stayed there once a few years ago. It's nice enough, with some fancier sections and some "individual door, motel-style" rooms, as well. It's located in the Garden District, on St. Charles Avenue, so you'd be a little hike from the Quarter, unless you left the dog in the room and took the streetcar. You could always drive around and park, though. You can find parking, but you'll still do a lot of walking.

Try Bennachin on Royal Street in the FQ. It's an authentic African restaurant, and they have vegetarian and meat dishes to die for! You must try the Akara appetizer - blackeyed pea fritters served with spicy tomato sauce - YUM!! I'd advise you to check online reviews of most places in the Quarter, though. In my experience, a lot of them do NOT rely on repeat business, and the food and/or service will reflect that, especially when it's really busy. There are amazing places to eat here, though. I'm sure you'll get some more recommendations on here ;-)

The name of the hotel is Maison St. Charles, btw, in case the link doesn't work...

There are a lot of pet-friendly hotels in New Orleans, but most will charge you a room cleaning fee. We stayed at one French Quarter hotel that had a $150 fee.

The Drury Hotel at Poydras & Carondelet is pet-friendly and doesn't charge a cleaning fee. It's not in the FQ, but about 5 blocks away.
