There was also quite a variety of high quality handmade items in the FM around Christmas time. I suppose a lot of artists/crafters come out of the woodwork during the holidays. It would be nice to have it year-round. It seems like there's a slow increase of it, though, which is awesome! It would be great if more visitors could take home authentic souvenirs and gifts, as opposed to imported crap with "NOLA" stamped on it!

I did buy a couple of miniature paintings on roof slates from an OLD house in the 9th Ward that was demolished after Katrina. She said the building was late-1700's, and already I thought that homes weren't even in the that area yet. But, still, they're pieces of history and made appreciated gifts.

Nico,
I think your original post had the answer to your question. Using the pawn shop TV show as an example, not many people would watch a show where only ordinary items were the primary focus.

I am guessing that the French Market is striving to keep the products in the more exciting category, similar to the Parisian and other successful flea markets and not all t shirt type souvenirs. I would not be swayed by any number of t shirts, but would be, by a hand painted slate roof tile, but that is just me.
