I grow papaya and pineapple here! I'm working on jackfruit and cherimoya. They are growing from seed. We will see if they survive. In containers so I can bring them inside of it gets too cold.

True, Philadelphia is the northernmost tip in the Humid Subtropical Zone. The hardiness zone straddles 7a/b - 8a. That means plants grow here associated with the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, etc. Examples are bamboo, camellias, certain varieties of hibiscus, etc.

The only part of the continental US that is truly tropical is extreme southern Florida south of the Palm Beaches. In the Miami area Durian, Jackfruit, Sapodilla, Mango, Mangosteen, Loquat, Breadfruit, Seagrape, etc. can grow. Coconut palms too. South Florida lies in the hardiness zone of 10a/b - 11.

New Orleans is in the hardiness zone of 8b - 9a.

There is a mango farm and a coconut palm tree farm across from where I work...
We're concerned the farmer is selling the land to developers. It so pretty to look at just tons of palm trees and mango trees. Would hate to see it go.

I don't doubt you. As a gardener I rejoice in the fact that one can create micro-climates.
