I bike everywhere in NOLA and i was always under the impression that locking your bike to street signs was perfectly legal. however, this morning i locked my bike to a street sign in front of 200 st charles... when i returned there was a note on my bike warning me that i was not allowed to park my bike on handrails or posts due to it being an 'pedestrian hazard', signed by st charles place building management (and on their letterhead to). my bike was not locked to anything that was part of their building, it was locked to the fire lane sign which i can only assume is state property.

anyway, i would have been livid if they cut my bike lock.

does anyone know if they have any jurisdiction to do this? i am pretty sure they are just being jerks and want to frighten me from parking my bike there again. cutting my bike lock when it is locked to city property sounds like bike theft to me, even if it is done by a reputable building management. ive done a search but couldnt find any conclusive answers, so if anyone on here knows whether or not it is legal to lock your bike to public property i would much appreciate it .

Worry more about the police doing it if they call to complain. Can't answer your question, sorry.

I wish I could help you, but I'll be watching this thread for an answer. I'm just starting to get brave enough to ride on the streets more and actually go places besides the park and the levee, lol. I just got my bike a few months ago and I've ridden more miles since then than I ever did as a kid!
