I am moving out to New Orleans around about October time for about a year. My husband is already working out in New Orleans but is staying in a motel at present. I have 3 children 4, 12 and 17 and 2 cats... I really don't know where to start looking? Can anyone suggest a good area that is both safe for the children and pets?
My husband likes Metairie. I like Slidell and I am sure they are very different? I am getting desperate now? Please can anyone help?? Many thanks in advance...

Are you considering public or private schools?

Senna, why do you think you prefer Slidell as they are quite different?

Public schools. Slidell seems to be farther away from city life? My kids are going to have a big lifestyle change which is exciting but also daunting. Slidell seemed to be more family orientated?? Maybe I am wrong...

The other important issue is that my son plays Ice Hockey. Its really important to him and I wanted to get him into a team. There is a team in Biloxi and a team in Lafayette so driving distance is important too.

Slidell is further from New Orleans, but parts of Metairie, particularly Old Metairie, are lovely and very family oriented. Slidell has a slightly more rural feel.

Your husband's 40 mile (64+ km each way) commute from Slidell to Metairie is not one I'd want to do on a regular basis, both from a time in transit and eco-carbon footprint basis. His assessment is not to be taken lightly as he has first hand impressions, and he will be the one in transit as you didn't indicate that you will have a worker's visa for yourself.

The commute from Slidell to Biloxi is more than 60 miles and from Metairie to Lafayette 130 miles. Seems a bit much to me, but I don't know how often you'd have to make the trek.

Since you're likely renting, have you been in touch with a real estate agent? You may want to contact one and specify some parameters. Good luck!

Thanks for your help. Thats exactly what my husband said that he didn't want to drive the distance to Slidell and back everyday. Yes I can work on his visa. Old Metairie is the place that he suggested too. So I guess I should listen to my husband after all?? How about cats in Old Metairie? Is there anywhere particular that you could suggest away from busy roads etc??

If you considering Old Metairie stay away from Metairie Road. That's the main street through Old Metairie.

I don't understand the cats question. Are you asking if cats are allowed in Old Metairie? Please explain.

But Metairie Rd did not flood during Katrina, nor the houses just off of it. yes, it is a busy street but there are many side streets to bypass sections of it.

I thought she wanted to stay away from busy streets. If that's the case, Metairie Road is the busiest street in Old Metairie.
