I am an RN with temporty assignment at Oschnser Med Center, downtown. Would love a furnished place to live with character above a complex with rented furniture. Any ideas? Unfamiliar with neighborhoods, so please be specific. Coming from non-descript, roll up the sidewalks, no I mean streets at 8pm rural New England town. Looking for excitement!
Oh, and wondering if local sailors enjoy their hobby Dec-Mar?
Thanks,
Deb

Can you give us more information about your rental criteria:
Price range?
# of bedrooms?
length of stay?
what does excitement mean to you?

Thanks,

Abraham Walker

Numerous facilities in the area are run by Ochsner - which one in particular are you at? When you say downtown, the one that comes to my mind is the outpatient facility on St. Charles.

Many people coming in on travel assignments seem to be under the impression that the big hospital is actually in the city. Ochsner Medical Center Main Campus is on Jefferson Highway - a bit out of the city, definitely not downtown.

Pook has it right. The hospital is on Jefferson. What neighborhood is that? Looking for a 15-20 min. commute at 0615. Would like a 1 bedroom furnished for around $1500. Maybe something to look at and walk to for shopping, browsing, eating/drinking. What neighborhood is that?

The main Ocshner hospital is located 1 mile outside of New Orleans in Jefferson Parish. I would reccommend the Carrollton/Riverbend neighborhood near the intersection of St. Charles and Carrollton Ave. Its close to the hospital, but still within the city limits. This area is dense with shops, restaurants and plenty of things to do. Picture a walkable area with 100+ year old houses, shady oak trees and the St. Charles streetcar which can take you downtown. A 1br in that area should be within your budget.

Your commute would be a breeze from here(~1mi). You can easily take your bike, if you're so inclined, as there is a off street bike path along the river that passes right in front of the hospital. A 15-20min commute? Ha! You could bike it in 10 and drive it in 5.

rburnett has excellent advice.

As a small-town Yankee myself, it took awhile for me to feel comfortable with the area surrounding the hospital as it's a bit dismal; however, day shift always has the campus bustling with all kinds of people - especially students of all areas of healthcare.

Ochsner is a great place to work and seems to be really popular with travelers. I've worked in area hospitals where staff nurses are downright nasty and I haven't found that at Ochsner yet - fingers crossed that I don't.

Best of luck!

As far as the sailing question, I can't give you specific info as far as seasons, and forgive me if you already know this, but New Orleans is located on a big lake, so sailing is actually pretty popular here. The Southern Yacht Club is the second oldest in the country. You should have no trouble finding sailing friends here.

Thanks for the replies about the hospital location and neighborhood surroundings. Thanks for the tip about Southern Yacht Club too.
We're looking forward to our time in the South.
